چکیده

The behaviour of a system comprising two competitive autocatalytic processes, A ] B] 2B, and A] C] 2C, rate \ k1a6 b 6 where and represent the concentrations of the various species, is considered. In a well-stirred batch reactor, the rate \ 2 a6 c6 , a6 , b 6 c6 Ðnal equilibrium composition always corresponds to a mixture of the two product species B and C, with their respective equilibrium concentrations depending on the ratio of the rate coefficients and the initial concentrations and If the i \ 21 0 0 . same reactions are carried out in a reaction-di†usion system, with local initiation of the reaction at one end of the reactor, travelling waves of reaction develop. This system can show exclusive product selectivity, with only one of the products being formed in the reactor, provided either the rate coefficient ratio i or the di†usion coefficient ratio di†ers from unity. If d \ BC both di†er from unity the system will select pure production of B if d [ i and pure production of C otherwise. Some interesting complex transient behaviour close to the marginal condition d \ i is reported.

Two-scale homogenization of nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems with slow diffusion

We derive a two-scale homogenization limit for reaction-di usion systems where for some species the di usion length is of order 1 whereas for the other species the di usion length is of the order of the periodic microstructure. Thus, in the limit the latter species will display di usion only on the microscale but not on the macroscale. Because of this missing compactness, the nonlinear coupling...

Special Session 29: Self-Organized Behavior of Nonlinear Elliptic Equations and Pattern Formation of Strongly Interacting Systems

Several phenomena can be described by a number of densities (of mass, population, probability, ...) distributed in a domain and subject to di↵usion, reaction, and either cooperative or competitive interaction. Whenever the interaction is the prevailing mechanism, one can reasonably expect pattern formation and, in the competitive case, that the several densities can not coexist and tend to segr...

The prior estimate and decay property of positive solutions are derived for a system of quasilinear elliptic 9 di$erential equations 3rst. Then, the nonexistence result for radially nonincreasing positive solutions of the system is implied. By using this nonexistence result, blow-up estimates for a class of quasilinear reaction–di$usion 11 systems (non-Newtonian 3ltration systems) are establish...

Fractional reaction–di usion

We derive a fractional reaction–di usion equation from a continuous-time random walk model with temporal memory and sources. The equation provides a general model for reaction–di usion phenomena with anomalous di usion such as occurs in spatially inhomogeneous environments. As a rst investigation of this equation we consider the special case of single species fractional reaction–di usion in one...

Trans-membrane signal transduction and biochemical Turing pattern formation

The Turing mechanism for the production of a broken spatial symmetry in an initially homogeneous system of reacting and di using substances has attracted much interest as a potential model for certain aspects of morphogenesis such as pre-patterning in the embryo, and has also served as a model for self-organization in more generic systems. The two features necessary for the formation of Turing ...
